Darien police are looking into whether a home invasion in town last week is connected to residential burglaries in Fairfield that occurred on the same day.
Sgt. Mauricio Vigil spoke to News 12 for the first time since officers responded to a 911 call about a break-in in progress at a house on Five Mile River Road around 5:45 a.m. last Thursday.
A trio of masked suspects located a key hidden outside one of the homes and used it to open the front door, according to Vigil, who said the homeowner told them at least one of the suspects was armed.
“The homeowner confronted the three masked suspects and fired one shot at the suspects. He was fearing for his safety and the safety of his family, which included two small children,” Vigil explained.
The suspects took off once the gun was fired. Not long after, Darien got a call from Bridgeport police who reported a juvenile, matching one of the suspect's descriptions, was admitted to Bridgeport Hospital with a gunshot wound, per Vigil.
“We're still looking into the possibility the male juvenile could be involved in our incident,” Vigil stated again on Monday, declining to elaborate further due to the ongoing investigation.
Bridgeport is also where police recovered the car the suspects used, according to Vigil, who said it was stolen from Fairfield. That town saw its own break-ins on March 5.
“We are working closely with the Fairfield Police Department, as well as Bridgeport Police Department, in connection with two residential burglaries that occurred in Fairfield,” Vigil told News 12.
He would not discuss those or detail any potential links between the incidents. Vigil also couldn’t comment on whether the incident was targeted or random. But he stressed there isn’t an ongoing threat to the community.
