Judge shoots down bid to stop proposed Yankee Stadium project
A judge rejected a bid Thursday from a Bronx group trying to stop construction on the proposed Yankee Stadium project.
Groundbreaking on the stadium is set to begin later in August. The group, Save Our Parks, had hoped to get a restraining order to put a halt on those plans. According to a Daily News report, the group doesn?t want the new stadium built because it will take down hundreds of trees from Macombs Dam and Mullaly parks. Attorneys for the Yankees argued any delay could jeopardize funding and the project?s completion date.
The projected $800 million stadium would seat 53,000 people. There are also plans in the project to make $50 million worth of improvements to the Bronx, including parkland on top of the stadium garages. The new stadium is expected to be open in time for the 2009 baseball season.
