An unusual request sent to the Turn to Tara team sparked a powerful act of kindness that arrived just in time to help a group of special needs students celebrate an iconic rite of passage.

Two weeks ago, News 12's senior reporter Tara Rosenblum received an email from Maria Alvarado, a teacher at the Martin Luther King Jr. High School in Westchester. The school services 140 students with special needs from across New York City, Long Island and the Hudson Valley.

"I always watch News 12 and its Turn to Tara, and a lot of the girls are getting so excited about prom and a lot of them cannot afford to buy expensive dresses so we reached out to you," she says.

Rosenblum shared the request on social media and a local influencer jumped into action.

Nicole Steinthal, who runs a lifestyle blog, says the response to her post was so overwhelming that it took her five days to collect all the donations from across Westchester and Connecticut.

The students were grateful, and the good deeds proved that kindness never goes out of style.
