'Leprechaun Leap For Literacy' event at Walnut Beach benefits Milford nonprofit

Volunteers dove into chilly waters Saturday at Milford's Walnut Beach for the Literacy Volunteers of Southern Connecticut's annual "Leprechaun Leap For Literacy."
Every year, jumpers dive into the Long Island Sound to benefit the nonprofit that provides free tutoring to adults interested in learning English.
"If you're in a position to give back, I feel strongly you should give back. I lived in Milford for 35 years, [I] did not know the literacy center was in Milford. And when I was exploring options for how to use my time, I became a tutor," said Nancy Johnston, who is also a board member of Literacy Volunteers of Southern Connecticut.
"It's just so important to give back whatever you can. And to me, this is such a meaningful way. I can't think of a better way to do it," said Betty Gerner, head trainer and another board member of the nonprofit.
The organization is still looking for donations of children's books and volunteers who would like to teach English.
