It's Thursday. That means it's time for Main Street, Connecticut. When we explore all kinds of fun locations in towns and cities across our area today, we are in Weston. Let's head right over to news 12 Connecticut's Mark Su. He's at Devil's Den Preserve. It's a beautiful spot there. Mark. Oh, Becky, I'll tell you what. This is a little slice of heaven, especially this time of the morning. It's so quiet here. You can hear, uh, pretty much nothing, which is kind of nice. This is the largest nature preserve in Southwester Connecticut with over 1700. Oh, that's where you'll find this kiosk, which, which really is the brains of the operation here. It gives you everything you need to know. Sunrise, sunset. Um, and what's cool is you can check out the navigations here so you can learn about Godfrey Pond, great ledges, the western Wander. Uh, and then you get a nice look at the entire map of all the trails here. You could spend all day, uh, going around here and checking things out. Um, I did want to get a little bit more information here. So, uh, I did ask, uh, this guy to give us, uh, some, some tips here on the trail. Hi there. And thank you for your interest in trail navigation here at Devil's Den. We have more than 20 miles of hiking trail. Some of which are open to cross country skiing when there's enough snow. The first thing you should do when you arrive at a reserve is get a copy of our map. Well, that's a good idea. Uh, you, you're gonna want to have a map, you're gonna want to know where you are, where you're going and you want to get lost in here. I mean, that's for people like me really. Um, but I'll tell you what, so many things to see here in nature. I mean, come on, you, you can't beat it. You really can't. But, uh, I think, I, I think I hear something though. What, what, what is that? Is it something or maybe, maybe it's a squirrel. Uh, maybe it was just a scroll, Becky. I'll tell you what though. Um, you're not gonna be able. That's, that, that doesn't sound like a squirrel. Um, Becky. I, I just wanna give you a heads up though. Those high heels you wear would not be good for conditions here. Just saying, no, you're absolutely right. It sounds like you better move along when you got some, a wolf coyotes. What's going on there? II, I guess it's a, I think it's a wolf. Let's go to News 12 Connecticut's Marks all who is at West History and Culture Center. Mark. Uh Well, good morning, Becky. Yeah. Yes. I'm listening to the Dulcea Tones here of opera singer James Melton, taking me, taking me back a little bit here. It's uh we're gonna check out. Uh So, so many of the great things here at uh the History and Culture Center and we've already featured the Coley House before on road trips. So I thought we kind of give you a little look inside here at some of the exhibits. Samantha Faron is gonna join me here this morning. Welcome. And you have a whole display here on the mountain. Tell us about that. Yes, we do. So, our new exhibit in our visitor center here at the Western History and Culture Center is called Weston. What lies Beneath and it's all about a home here in Weston um that has been around for over 250 years. However, in the 19 thirties it was owned by the Melton family, uh, which included James Melton who was America's favorite tenor. He was one of the most popular opera singers of the 19 thirties, forties and fifties. And so he lived in a home here in Weston that were featuring in this exhibit. And his daughter is going to be, yes, his daughter Margo is going to be joining us on Thursday, August 15th at 7 p.m. And she's going to be talking with the current homeowner and they're going to have a discussion about growing up in West Margo is going to tell us a lot about her father and her mother's life here in West during the forties and fifties. And they're going to talk about how the house has changed over time and the property here is just magnificent itself. I mean, we, we can't really do it justice here today, but I mean, between the barn and some of the exhibits you have outside as well. Yes. Yeah, we have a beautiful sculpture garden, the Daniel E off at the third sculpture garden. Um So we really encourage people to visit. We're open Thursdays and Sundays from 1 to 4 and families can come bring a picnic, picnic on the ground, enjoy the sculpture garden and then come inside here and enjoy Weston. What lies beneath as well as tours of the Coley House and you do have a music event as well coming. Yes, this Sunday, July 28th at 530 is music at the barn and we have Parker's tangent coming to play. And then, um, on August 15th in the morning, we have a great kids program called 19 Forties Fun and Games Camp where Children get to play games all about the 19 forties. So they get to with toys. So it'll be a lot of fun. That's at 10 a.m. on August 15th, Samantha. Thank you so much. So let's get right to news 12, Connecticut's Mark Sudal who's standing by at the lunch box. Mark. Hey, good morning, Becky. Yeah, the lunch box, uh, the mainstay here. It's been here for almost 50 years. Josh to and his wife, Jessica bought the place. What April 2014? There you go. So, uh, you've been through a lot here already. You surviving COVID and all that. Yeah. My, uh, Jessica and I purchased the business from the, the AAV family in April of, uh, I'm gonna look this way, uh, from, uh, in April of 2014. Uh, at that point, you know, they were in the, you know, 30 something years. Uh, we've maintained the same footprint. It's always been a diner style restaurant supporting the, the town and, you know, breakfast, lunch and dinner, seven days a week. Uh, we, we remained true to that and, uh, did some extensive renovations that you could see here we brought in. We started with beer and wine then brought in full liquor a couple of months later. And, uh, you know, we do have a large aggressive menu and we've been able to gut it out. We sort of figured things out by 2019 and then boom. So we've been pivoting, we've been pivoting ever since. So what's, what's the big attractions, the sandwiches. Uh We're the only game in town up here in the frontier, uh, breakfast, lunch and dinner, seven days a week. However, things have changed over, you know, since COVID we no longer offer breakfast, we got rid of that, uh, about a year and a half ago in April. It just, you know, it just wasn't sustainable. So we're now a lunch and dinner house open from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. five days a week. So we've had to sort of shrink the, uh, shrink the schedule just to survive, uh, staffing and things like that, you know, again, an extensive menu, everything scratch made. So, uh, we do things from curing our own meats. We cure fish. We, uh, it's rather aggressive. Uh, however, we do like to, uh, uh, you know, catered everybody's taste well and about this, about the 20 seconds we have left our kitchens closed. Thank you. But what are some of the, what do you get? Burgers, steaks? I mean, what is, we have everything, sandwiches. We have a, we have a modified Greek pan pizza that we've had here for decades. Cured salmon is great, cured pork belly. Uh, we have, uh, all scratch made sauces and dressings and everything's fresh made daily and we're here to, we're here to please. Well, I'm glad you are here. I'm sorry, I didn't get a chance to taste any of it. The restaurant business could be a lover. It's a tough business. I agree that operates it, but we're here to serve and we're, I'd love to have you come back and taste. All right, Josh. Thank you so much.
