Man arraigned in crash that killed wife, unborn child and teen
A man was arraigned today on manslaughter and negligent vehicular homicide charges in the death of his wife, an unborn baby and a friend.
Police say Lawrence Carter, his wife and two friends were on their way to a dinner celebration when Carter started racing another car and it turned tragic. The crash killed 23-year-old old Brianna Torres-Carter and her unborn baby Luna, as well as 18-year-old Shalymar Herrera.
Police say Carter and a friend agreed to race each after meeting at the Sports Center of Shelton. After racing on River Road in Shelton, Carter lost control of his car and hit another car head-on.
Torres-Carter's family says she was just weeks away from giving birth.
"Losing a child and then losing a grandchild, an unborn baby, it's been a horrible, horrible nightmare for them," said Tom Ganim, the attorney for Torres-Carter's family.
Carter turned himself in to Shelton police in June.
On Monday, the court ordered that Carter have no contact with the victims' families. Carter posted a $50,000 bond and is due back in court next month.
Carter and both passengers in the car all had a connection to the Bridgeport Military Academy.
News 12 did not hear back from Carter's attorney for comment.
