Mayor Bloomberg declares heat emergency in BX, city
With temperatures expected to reach close to 100 degrees in the next few days, Mayor Bloomberg Monday declared a heat emergecy.
The mayor along with city officials say the high temperatures teamed up with high humidity pose some dangers for residents, especially seniors. People should drink plenty of fluids throughout the day and try to stay in air-conditioned rooms. Officials say if air conditioning is not an option, residents should head to a pool or beach. Residents who choose the beach or pool should remember to protect themselves from the sun. The Office of Emergency Management adds cooling centers will also be opened at some senior and community centers throughout the borough.
Meanwhile, Con Edison officials are urging all residents to conserve energy to prevent blackouts.
