Mayor Michael Bloomberg unveiled a plaque Monday to mark the one-year anniversary of the deaths of two firefighters in a 99-cent store blaze.
Bloomberg dedicated the plaque at Engine Company 75/Ladder 33/Battalion 19 at 2175 Walton Ave. He said it memorializes the determination of Lt. Howard Carpluk and firefighter Michael Reilly.
"When the rest of us are running away from danger, there are a group of people ... who put themselves in harm's way to protect us," Bloomberg said.
Carpluk and Reilly responded to a raging fire at a Walton Avenue discount store in Mount Eden last year. The floor collapsed, burying responders in the basement.
