Cleanup continued Sunday in Brownsville after heavy rain and wind over Memorial Day weekend caused trees across the city to topple and lose large branches.

A large tree fell onto three parked cars on Union Street around 1:30 a.m., according to neighbors.

The tree also blocked the roadway for much of the day as crews worked to remove it.

New York City Parks forestry crews spent Sunday cutting up and removing the fallen tree.

Neighbors said the tree had shown signs of deterioration for years and claimed they repeatedly complained to the city about the tree's rotting roots.

Some residents said they believe the damage could have been prevented.

The fallen tree was one of several incidents reported across the city during the stormy holiday weekend.

According to NYC Parks, heavy rain can saturate soil and destabilize tree roots, increasing the risk of trees falling when combined with strong winds.

Residents whose vehicles were damaged said they are now concerned about how they will cover repair costs.
