If you're heading back to work today and take the train, you may notice prices have gone up.

Train fares are up 5%.

That started Monday.

South Norwalk to Grand Central peak is $18.25 one way and off peak is $13.50

The State DOT says the hike was approved July 30.

The new rates affect Metro-North and the CT Rail Hartford line and Shoreline East.

The state DOT says the fare increases will "help support continued service levels and investments on Connecticut's rail networks."

The state is also delivering record investments along the rail lines, with more than $6 billion in state and federal funding planned for capital projects in the next few years, including the WALK Bridge on the New Haven Line in Norwalk, and the East Norwalk train station.

The last increase was two years ago when fares jumped 4.5%.
