Mosquitoes trapped last month in West Haven have tested positive for the West Nile virus.
According to researchers, this marks the beginning of the West Nile virus season.
Researchers anticipate the season will last from now through September, with further buildup of the virus along the way.
Experts are encouraging residents to wear mosquito repellent and cover bare skin when outdoors.
Since 2000, there have been three deaths in cases of the virus.
