Bodum USA has recalled 5.9 million of their French press coffee makers due to a defect that has left dozens of people with burn injuries.

The company says the product has replaceable glass carafes that can shatter during use if already cracked or damaged.

Using a metal spoon to stir the coffee can cause the unexpected breakage.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says a total of 48 burn incidents have been reported so far.

Bodum USA says this recall includes their Bistro, Brazil, Caffettiera, Chambord, Crema, Java, Jesper, and Kenya models.

The product is sold at Target, Walmart, home goods stores and online retailers.

Bodum USA is offering a free plastic stirring spoon and warning label to customers on their website.
