According to the state Labor Department, the Bronx has the highest unemployment rate in the state. However, a new program is helping to keep residents off the unemployment line.
The Northeast Bronx Redevelopment Corporation runs a commercial driver?s license training program. Those who enroll in the free program train to drive tractor-trailers, buses and trucks. A driving instructor in the program says students receive help in getting their commercial driver?s license permit and passing the test.
The program is funded by the City Council. It has helped dozens of residents get the skills they need to break into the job market since it began in February. The Northeast Bronx Redevelopment Corporation is still taking applications for the program. For more information, residents should call (718) 944-3734.
