The Norwalk Inn is hoping to make a dent in the nationwide blood donor shortage with a new blood drive initiative.

“The Red Cross needs blood now more than ever. It’s a 20-year low. Giving blood keeps people alive,” said Maria DeVito, the co-owner of the Norwalk Inn.

Every eight weeks, the ballroom at the Norwalk Inn will be used as a Red Cross blood donation center.

This first blood drive of many was a success with more than 60 appointments booked and 40 pints of blood expected to be collected – which is enough to help 120 people.

Blood donations helped Chris Handrinos, who owned the Norwalk Inn for nearly 40 years. His daughter, DeVito, has been rolling up her sleeves to give back to others like the Red Cross did for her family.

“My father suffered from internal bleeding at the end of his life, he had very low hemoglobin levels. The question was always, ‘Is there blood available, is the blood going to be a match?’” said DeVito. “Because the Red Cross had this blood on hand, my father never had an issue…he was able to extend his life and enjoy his grandchildren, our family and the Norwalk Inn.”

DeVito said giving blood is easy, especially in such a positive and relaxing atmosphere such as the inn.
