It?s been almost one year since two firefighters died jumping from a burning building in the Bronx. The fire department took steps to prevent further tragedies, however, many believe more must be done.
The NYFD has reissued the safety ropes, which were recalled in 2000. The two firefighters who perished did not have personal safety ropes, as did the other four surviving men. Currently 1,500 firefighters have the new safety ropes. The fire department says all firefighters are scheduled to have them by June. Peter Gorman of the Uniformed Fire Officers Associations says more ongoing training is also needed.
Others believe the illegal subdividing of the apartment building is also to blame for the tragedy by leaving the firefighters no way to escape. The district attorney says although no criminal charges have been filed against the building owner, the case is still active.
