With Sunday?s temperatures expected to reach record highs, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has issued an air quality health advisory.Officials say they are concerned about the levels of a pollutant called ground-level ozone. It?s not the same thing as the ozone that protects the earth. This type of ozone is one of the main things that make up smog and is caused partially by automobile exhaust. The DEC recommends that Bronx residents who exercise or work outdoors and those with respiratory problems like asthma should try not to do anything strenuous outside on Sunday. Officials recommend using mass transit and carpooling whenever possible to help cut down on harmful emissions. They say another way to cut back on ozone levels is to cut back on energy use in the home.
