NY state budget delayed again amid talks on bail, housing

Budget negotiations continue in New York after Gov. Kathy Hochul and the Legislature failed to reach an agreement on Monday's extended deadline.

Hochul signed a second one-week budget extender on Monday, which makes sure state employees get paid until next week as budget talks intensify.

The same two issues that held up the budget last week are at the forefront now -- bail reform and housing -- as we enter a second week passed the deadline.

Lawmakers are no closer to nailing down a budget, according to Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie. The future of bail reform is dominating most of the conversations.

State lawmakers who represent Hudson Valley districts are weighing in on where things stand.

Lawmakers have until next Monday to either pass the budget or file for a third extender.

State Assemblyman Brian Maher co-sponsored a bill on Monday that would withhold the governor's pay between the budget deadline and when a late budget is passed. Legislators aren't currently paid during late budget negotiations.
