Bridgeport Animal Control is asking for the public's help after a pit bull was dropped off in the middle of a rainy night last week.

Surveillance video shows a man and a truck. He left the pit bull inside a crate at 1:42 a.m. It is possible he found the dog and was trying to bring it to safety, but Chief Animal Control Officer Jennifer Merenda says it's customary for a concerned person bringing in a dog to call animal control ahead of time.

Officer Merenda says that if the animal suffered, which she says this dog did, whoever is responsible could face a misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty.

"She's shivering, she's soaked to the bone. That's a level of suffering she had to endure for several hours. That's not fair for her to have to endure that," she said.

The dog is currently doing well, animal control officers say.

"We want to make sure that we are prosecuting," she said. "We are making sure that we are standing up for these animals when these things are happening. These pit bulls can't handle 57 degrees, raining from 1:42 in the morning to 8 a.m. when I come to work."

Anyone with information that could help officers understand this dog's story is asked to call police.
