Stamford police say a 19-year-old resident is dead after a get-together with other car enthusiasts ended in violence.
Police say the shooting happened in the parking lot of RPM Raceway at 600 West Ave. around 10:45 p.m. Sunday. They say RPM Raceway and the other businesses nearby were all closed at the time.
Authorities say more than 20 people were using the vacant parking lot for what was described as a car meet, or a meetup of a group of car enthusiasts.
"They meet up and hang out in random parking lots, and at some point in time, a dispute erupted that resulted in gunfire," said Lt. Tom Scanion.
Police say a 19-year-old was shot and killed. They also say a 33-year-old and a 17-year-old went to the hospital but are expected to recover.
The parking lot was closed Monday morning as police investigated, but it has since reopened.
Carmen Guzman arrived to her workplace nearby the scene at 6:50 a.m. Monday. She says she had to park elsewhere for the day due to the investigation.
"This is the first time we've had an experience like this happen around our office," she said. "It was just a lot of glass on the floor and the evidence markers were being placed down…It was daylight, but it definitely made me think about the late nights we do spend at the office."
Two white Nike sneakers separated by several yards were on the ground at the scene. There also were two white cars parked across multiple spots.
The lot was filled with tire marks from doughnuts and burnouts that police believe happened before the shooting.
Police did not give details on a suspect or motive.
Officers went to nearby businesses to see if any have security cameras that might have caught what happened.
This is the second homicide in Stamford this year.
