Bridgeport police say a 58-year-old man from the city was fatally shot outside a deli Thursday night.
The shooting happened around 8:55 p.m. at the corner of East Main and Arctic streets, marking the city's seventh homicide of the year.
Police say they were called to the area on a report of an unresponsive man lying on the ground near Shorty's Deli. When officers arrived, they say they found Mike Gaines with a gunshot wound to his head. He was taken to the hospital, where he later died of his injuries.
Gaines' family says he was a well-known community figure who loved playing basketball.
Police say this appears to be an isolated incident, with Gaines the only person targeted. Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death. No arrests have been made.
The fatal shooting comes amid a wave of violent crime in the city.
Police say Deron Dacosta, 21, was fatally shot at the Trumbull Gardens housing complex on Trumbull Avenue last Tuesday. Brianna McKoy, 23, was shot and killed at the Coachlight Square Condominiums on Vincelette Street during a domestic violence incident two days later, according to police.
Anyone with information is asked to call Det. Harper at 203-581-5239 or the Bridgeport Police Tips Line at 203-567-TIPS.
