Police: Newtown home condemned after fire, showed signs of hoarding

Officers say they tried to get into the home but were delayed several minutes due to a large amount of materials in the home consistent with a hoarding situation.

Newtown police say a Parmalee Hill Road home showing signs of hoarding was condemned after a fire broke out early Tuesday morning.
Police say they went to the home for a welfare check. Officers were speaking to an occupant through a closed door when they noticed a fire and a large amount of smoke coming from the stove.
Officers say they tried to get into the home but were delayed several minutes due to a large amount of materials in the home consistent with a hoarding situation.
The homeowner was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation.
Four officers were treated at the scene for minor injuries and smoke inhalation, and one officer was taken to the hospital and released with a minor injury.
