A Rhode Island man is facing charges for strangling a woman and injuring a baby at the I-95 North rest stop in Fairfield earlier this month, state police say.

The incident happened Dec. 7. Authorities say Ariel Valdez was in a truck and arguing with a mechanic on the phone when a woman in the front passenger seat tried to calm him down.

Police say Valdez then strangled the woman and smashed out the rear window of the vehicle during their argument.

The window shattered and a piece of glass fell onto a 1-month-old baby in the back seat, police say.

The baby suffered cuts and was bleeding.

When police arrived on scene, an ambulance was called for the baby to be evaluated.

Valdez returned to Rhode Island and was taken into custody by law enforcement. Valdez was extradited from Rhode Island to Connecticut Monday.

His charges include risk of injury to a child, reckless endangerment and strangulation.

Valdez is being held on a $100,000 bond.
