A Nissan hit a mother and two children crossing Fairfield Avenue in Bridgeport, police say.
It happened just before 9 a.m. Thursday.
Police say the 4-year-old boy was critically injured, while his 2-year-old sister had minor bruises. Their mother did not sustain any injuries.
City Councilman Scott Burns, who represents Black Rock, says the area is overdue for safety improvements.
"It's a dangerous intersection, and it's a direct pipeline to two schools, and it needs to be fixed," says Burns.
Police say the driver pulled over and cooperated with police.
Fairfield Avenue and Brewster Street were closed for a time but have since reopened.
