Law enforcement officials in Passaic County are investigating an incident where the remains of a human fetus were found in the basement of a home.
The remains of that child are now in the possession of the county medical examiner. An autopsy will determine how the child died.
Officials say that police were called to a home on Balsam Road in Wayne Sunday around 5:45 p.m.
Neighbors tell News 12 New Jersey that there was a large police response, with Wayne police and the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office responding. They were reported at the home for several hours.
The Passaic County prosecutor says that the homeowners found the fetus in a storage container in their basement.
It was not clear if the child belonged to someone living at the home or if the remains were brought in. The child’s mother has not been identified.
Anyone who may have information about the incident is asked to call the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office tip line at 1-877-370-PCPO or tips@passaiccountynj.org or contact the Wayne Police Detective Bureau at 973-694-0600.
