A critically ill 5-week-old puppy was euthanized and 16 other dogs were removed from a home with no food or running water, leading to 16 charges against a Naugatuck woman.
Animal control officers learned of the puppy's condition and took it to a veterinarian, but the animal had to be put down. As investigators looked further into the case, they found 16 dogs living in unsanitary conditions without access to food or running water.
Authorities condemned the home and obtained an arrest warrant for Melissa Mae Ahlgren.
Police said Ahlgren also posted a fake online advertisement using information associated with the animal control officer involved in the investigation and falsely advertised sexual services.
Investigators said she also had an outstanding arrest warrant connected to a DUI case from June.
Ahlgren is charged with animal cruelty, harassment, stalking and other offenses. She faces a total of 16 charges and is being held on more than $100,000 bond.
