The Connecticut Department of Public Health (DEP) says a coyote involved in a recent incident in Fairfield has tested positive for rabies following laboratory testing.
According to state health officials, the animal was tested by the State Public Health Laboratory. The Department of Public Health said all people and animals affected by the incident are receiving appropriate care.

Rabies is a serious but preventable viral disease that affects the nervous system of mammals, including humans. Health officials say vaccination and avoiding contact with wildlife are key steps in preventing exposure.
The DEP and public health officials recommend residents take the following precautions:
- Keep dogs and cats up to date on rabies vaccinations.
- Do not approach, feed or touch wild animals or unfamiliar stray animals, especially those that appear sick, injured or unusually aggressive.
- Supervise pets outdoors. Keep dogs leashed, keep cats indoors and bring pets inside at dusk and overnight.
- Remove potential wildlife attractants by securing garbage and not leaving pet food or bird seed outside.
Anyone who is bitten or scratched by an animal should immediately wash the wound with soap and water and contact a health care provider or local health department for guidance.
Health officials continue to monitor the situation and remind residents that prompt medical attention after a potential exposure can help prevent rabies infection.
