Residents trapped as Bridgeport apartment elevator remains out of service for three weeks

Residents of a Lindley Street apartment complex are facing a dangerous and frustrating situation as the building's only elevator has been out of service for three weeks, leaving seniors and people with disabilities stranded on upper floors.

Joulane Cyril says her 90-year-old mother and disabled son are unable to get to medical appointments and would be trapped in the event of a fire.

"It's a tragedy with the elevator being broken," Cyril said. "If this was on the first floor, we would be able to get them out. But it would be a sad day in Bridgeport if a fire breaks out."

City officials have confirmed that the broken elevator is a violation of local, state, and federal housing laws. They are currently investigating the matter.

A spokesperson for the apartment complex told News 12, "The parts needed to repair the elevator are on back order, but we hope to receive and install them as quickly as possible."
