One woman was killed and two men were injured early Wednesday when a 600-foot coal carrier plowed into the trio?s sailboat as they cruised the Long Island Sound.Coast Guard officials say the freighter hit the sailboat ?Essence? just north of Riverhead, Long Island. The New Haven Coast Guard rushed to the scene, where they found a female passenger ?in bad shape.? Commander Bob McKenna says the woman was given CPR, but was later pronounced dead at Yale New Haven Hospital. The men are expected to survive. All three victims were wearing life vests, which the Coast Guard says probably saved the men?s lives.The 92-foot Essence was headed to Greenwich at the time of the collision and according to the Coast Guard, sank as the rescue took place. The Essence was registered in the Cayman Islands.
