Sen. Richard Blumenthal tells news 12 the decision by the Trump administration to cancel international student visas is shocking.
The decision has impacted students attending colleges and universities around the county, including at Yale and The University of Connecticut. Blumenthal says at least 88 universities nationwide have reported that their students have had their visas revoked.
"They've been done without any apparent reason and without notice to the schools or the students. That's why I am going to be demanding answers from the State Department. Canceling these student visas harms not only them, but also the country, because we depend on their scholarship and their research to advance knowledge and scientific progress," he said.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in March that in some cases, visas were revoked because students were involved in activities that "run counter to US national interests".
In a statement, UConn officials say although the number of impacted students is small, the "consequences for those impacted are significant." Officials did not provide an exact number of students. As of now, the school says no international students or scholars at UConn Health have had their visas pulled.
In February, UConn created a rapid response team to address immigration policy changes impacting its community. Officials are also reminding students and faculty that there are behavior health services and employee assistance programs available.
