Greenwich's sewage system along Sound Shore Road burst Friday, spewing smelly sewage from underground.
Officials aren't sure what caused the break yet, but Thursday's rain may have played a part. The break is the third the town has had since the 1980s.
The waste will now end up into nearby waters. The sewage is being pumped into a nearby storm drain and flushed into the Myanis River and out into the Sound. The town had to be granted permission to do that from the state due to the environmental impact.
Residents in the Cos Cob, Old Greenwich and Old Mynis sections of town are being asked to conserve water while the town deals with the situation.
