What began as a sixth birthday party became something much more meaningful for one Brooklyn family.

Surrounded by loved ones and pink-and-purple decorations, 6-year-old Khloe celebrated her birthday Friday with smiles, laughter and a heartfelt tribute to the mother she never had the chance to know.

In an emotional moment during the celebration, Khloe performed a special dance in honor of her mother, Sha-Asia Semple, who died while giving birth to her in 2020.

“She’s going to know that her mom is loved,” said Dennis Semple, father of Sha-Asia. “I have it all around my house to show that her memory is still there.”

Family members say they have spent the last six years making sure Khloe understands who her mother was through stories, photographs and traditions that keep her memory alive.

While the day focused on Khloe’s growth and future, relatives say they have not forgotten the circumstances surrounding Sha-Asia’s death.

The family filed a lawsuit against the hospital after an autopsy found that an anesthesiologist incorrectly inserted her epidural catheter during labor. The case was eventually settled.

The tragedy also highlights ongoing concerns about maternal mortality. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Black women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women.

“I deal with it every day,” said Semple. “Some days I cry, sometimes I smile. She makes me smile. I was there while they were working on her. I was there in the room, and the way I was feeling, I’m glad he’s not in the country anymore,” a family member said.

As the music faded and the tribute came to an end, the moment served as more than a remembrance of loss.

For Khloe’s family, it was a celebration of the enduring bond between mother and daughter — a connection they say will never be broken.

“My granddaughter brings me all the joy,” said Semple. “Just looking at her, because I see my daughter in her.”
