Some Bronx and city students didn?t make the grade this summer in the Department of Education?s Summer Success Academy.
Education officials say out of the 3,000 third-graders who attended the program, 54 percent failed their reading and math exams. According to educators, this is the lowest number of passing students in three years. Meanwhile, out of the more than 2,000 seventh-graders, 59 percent failed their exams.
Fifth-graders were the only group to come out on top this summer. Education officials say more than half of the 6,000 students are able to move up a grade level in September. School officials believe this promotion policy will better prepare third, fifth and seventh-graders for the next grade level.
