Stamford and Norwalk police departments announced Friday a gun buyback and free safe event for Oct. 5.
Officials say they will be giving gift cards for $25-$300 for guns turned in, depending on the kind of weapon.
They will also have a limited number of free PIN code gun safes for legal gun owners.
Officials hope they will get more guns turned in than in previous years.
"In the past two years, we've been able to retrieve up to 33 guns." Stamford Police Sgt. Adrianna Molina says. "We're hoping that with this news conference, we can encourage more individuals to come forward so those numbers can actually double."
Officials say nonworking guns, ammunition, BB guns and pellets may be turned in but are not eligible for gift cards.
Authorities say guns must be transported in the trunk of the car.
