A Stamford man is highlighting the great importance of organ donating during Donate Life Month this April.
Marine veteran John Rubino is one of only 47 people in the United States who have donated two organs to two strangers.
In 2019, the Stamford resident donated a kidney to Stamford hairdresser Jessica Rabasco. Last month Rubino donated part of his liver to 8-month-old Ariany Perez.
"It's a blessing to be able to help families that are in need and to be able to change the ending to someone's story," said Rubino.
Rubino says his two organ recipients are doing well and he still sees Rabasco on a weekly basis.
There are over 100,000 people in the U.S. like Rabasco and Perez who need an organ.
Rubino joined New England Donor Services Tuesday outside of the Government Center in Stamford to recognize Donate Life Month.
"It's really an incredible part of humanity to see that kind of generosity," said Alexandra Glazier, president and CEO of New England Donor Services.
At the flag raising in Stamford Tuesday, Rubino said organ donation is another way to be able to pass on your legacy and save a life.
Anyone can register as a donor with the Department of Motor Vehicles or click here.
