Stamford Mayor Caroline Simmons declared that she won a second term Tuesday night.

Simmons says her win shows that people wanted her and her team to continue their work of "building a city that's more inclusive, affordable and a vibrant place for everyone."

Simmons also says that regardless of who residents voted for, she will be a mayor for everyone and continue to enhance the quality of life in all of the city's neighborhoods.

Four years ago, Simmons made national headlines when she beat former New York Mets and Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine to become the first female mayor in Stamford's history.

Simmons has focused her campaign on infrastructure, specifically her work on improving the city's schools and roads. Simmons has also promised that during a second term, she would work on improving train station and bridges.

The Democrat was challenged by Nicola Tarzia, a former school board member, vocational teacher and local business owner.
