Police say a Stamford man spent hours drinking Sunday before crashing his car and possibly paralyzing a 53-year-old woman who was on her way to buy a Father's Day card for her husband.
Elio Martinez, 43, is accused of drunken driving and careening into five cars at the corner of East Main and North State streets. Police say he tested three times over the legal blood alcohol limit and had no driver's license or insurance.
Police say witnesses saw Martinez weaving in and out of traffic before the wreck.
Pictures taken after the incident show the woman's car in the opposite lane of traffic, where another car struck it as well.
At Martinez's arraignment Monday, the judge increased bond to $250,000.
