Protecting New York City?s transit system from terrorism is taking longer than expected, according to the state comptroller.

A new report by state Comptroller Alan Hevesi?s office found 10 major projects are a year or more behind schedule. Some of the security projects include chemical detectors, surveillance cameras and strengthening underwater subway tunnels to withstand an explosion. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) blames several factors for the delays, including changing budgets and unexpected construction delays.

Meanwhile, Hevesi?s report praises the projects that are underway. Hevesi also applauds the increased police presence around the transit system and the new public relations campaign reminding the public to report suspicious activity.
