Supporters of legalized marijuana rallied Monday at Local 338 of the Retail Workers Union in Mineola.

Supporters say legalizing marijuana could bring jobs and tax revenue, free up the court system and expunge pot convictions for many New Yorkers. They want lawmakers to back the Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act. The bill would legalize recreational marijuana in the state and provide for the taxable sale of the product.

"This is something that we really need to take care of this session," says Assemblywoman Taylor Raynor.

However, opponents say New York is rushing into legalizing pot and that regulatory issues need to be worked out first. Supporters say quick action is needed now.

"I think we recognize that recreational marijuana is probably something that will be coming to this state but we need to do it right," says Sen. Jim Gaughran.

Albany lawmakers have until next week to make a decision on legalizing marijuana or not.
