Officials have released the body cam footage and 911 audio recording in the case of a Stamford man who died after being taken into police custody.

The family of Steven Barrier says a relative called 911 on Oct. 23 -- Barrier's birthday. The state's attorney says after the initial call, Barrier took off. Almost two hours later, 911 was contacted again via text to say he had returned. Police responded, but say Barrier took off again.

Officers say they found Barrier at a Home Depot on West Main Street.

Body cam video shows police taking Barrier into custody without incident. At the time he said he was "tired."

Officers say they carried Barrier to the car. The officer behind the wheel asked the other officer whether they should go to the police department or the hospital. The officers responded saying the police department.

But by the time they got there, Barrier was unconscious and slipped to the floor. The officers then carried Barrier into a room, leaned him up against a wall and waited for the paramedics to arrive.

Emergency personnel responded and took him to the hospital where he later died.

The state's attorney has pledged a full investigation. The medical examiner did not find any sign of injury.

The state's attorney says they are in contact with the family to keep them aware of the investigation.

News 12 reached out to Stamford police, Barrier's mother and her attorney for comment, but have not heard back.
The NAACP released a statement regarding the release of the body camera footage in the Steven Barrier case. It said: "The Connecticut State NAACP has some very serious questions pertaining to this matter, and one of our major questions is why did the police make the choice to bring this young black man, who they knew had a history of mental health issues to jail instead of the hospital? It seems like the police neglected to protect and serve this young man, and they made an insensitive decision by bringing him to a jail cell and that decision was deadly. We will wait for the full examiners report before we make any further comments, but we are currently very disturbed by what we see in the video with the lack of concern and compassion that is being displayed."
