Snow blasts region, stalls morning commute, closes some school districts

Posted: Updated:

A system carrying heavy snow pushed its way through the region Wednesday morning stalling the morning commute and closing school for some districts.

The National Weather Service issued winter weather advisories from 3 a.m. to 11 a.m. for northern Fairfield and New Haven counties, and for Litchfield County through 10 a.m.

News 12 meteorologists say the impacts of the system varied throughout the state Wednesday morning, but road conditions were slushy. Communities bordering Long Island Sound saw more snow, while totals tapered off to around 1-1.5 inches in Litchfield County.

The snow wrapped up around 7 a.m. but sleet and wintry mixes are expected to linger throughout the morning. Officials say all drivers should still plan on slippery road conditions and reduced visibility during morning rush hour.

The system is expected to completely clear out of the area by Wednesday afternoon, with below average temperatures through Thursday.

School districts in Monroe, Trumbull, and Bridgeport closed while other communities had 2-hour delays.
