A Center Moriches man is facing charges for allegedly driving drunk with his twin baby grandchildren in the car.
According to police, the trouble started at Burger King on Montauk Highway in Shirley. That's where they got a report of an intoxicated man sleeping in his car at the drive-thru window with two babies in the back seat.
Police say that call came in at around 12:30 a.m. Saturday but when officers arrived, they say the driver had already taken off.
Police say they pulled 59-year-old James Singleton over about three miles away and when police approached his Land Rover, they say they found Singleton's 5-month-old twin grandsons in the back seat.
The Center Moriches man was placed under arrest and charged with felony DWI under Leandra's Law, as well as driving without a license and endangering the welfare of a child.
Police say the baby boys were in their car seats. Officials say they were not harmed and were released to their grandmother, Robin Singleton, at the scene. Robin Singleton says her husband should have never been behind the wheel.
"I know my husband has a drinking problem," said Robin Singleton. "Instead of us getting a call to come and pick the children up, it could have been a tragic call -- we have a fatal. The babies are dead, James is dead. How would everybody feel then?"
James Singleton was held overnight by Suffolk police and went before a judge Saturday. He has been ordered to home confinement until his next court date, which is scheduled for Feb. 5.
