The man accused of driving high on drugs and without a license when he crashed into a Suffolk County police officer's patrol car in Holtsville was released Wednesday without having to post bail.
Police say Robert Haff Jr., of Oakdale, was driving a pickup truck northbound on Nicolls Road just before midnight. Police say that's when Haff hit the back of a marked police vehicle.
The officer inside the vehicle was taken to Stony Brook Hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening. He is expected to be OK.
Prosecutors said in court that Haff admitted to snorting meth and that an officer at the crash scene saw white residue under his nostril.
According to court records, Haff has prior convictions and 11 open cases in Suffolk with multiple arrests last year for allegedly driving without a license and possession of a controlled substance.
Police say Haff's pickup truck was impounded for a safety check.
Haff was arraigned on several charges including driving while ability impaired by drugs, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and criminal possession of a controlled substance.
The judge in the case acknowledged that he was constrained under the new bail reform law to release Haff, but did order him to have a GPS monitor.
