Bail reform law prompts call for quarterly crime statistic reports in Nassau

Nassau County legislators are taking steps to see if New York's bail reform law is having an effect on crime rates.
Presiding Officer Richard Nicolello has introduced a bill that would require the Nassau Police Department to provide quarterly crime statistic reports to the Legislature. Nicolello says he wants the data on how many defendants are committing more crimes and how many defendants aren't showing up for scheduled hearings.
"What I hope to get from this is to gather that data to see how many people have been let out, how many people are committing crimes when they're out and how many people are you know just disappearing," says Nicolello. "And it's that type of evidence I think that will help us convince Albany to change this bill."
The bail reform law went into effect last month.
Nicolello plans to hold a bail reform hearing next Thursday at 11 a.m. in Mineola.
