A Bridgeport family's funeral service plans for a man killed in a motorcycle crash have been scaled back because of the coronavirus, they say.
Ricardo Ruiz, 26, of Bridgeport, was killed one week ago at the intersection of East Main and Stillman streets when the motorcycle he was riding crashed with a 2006 Nissan Altima.
Ruiz's family tells News 12 they are a very tight knit family, but have not been able to comfort each other in person over his death due to the pandemic, and the risk of spreading the virus.
His family says he was rushed to the hospital, and suffered traumatic brain injuries before he died a few days later.
Due to the coronavirus, residents in Connecticut can hold a funeral with no more than eight people in attendance.
Frank Santos, Ruiz's brother, says not being able to say goodbye surrounded by all of his close friends and family has only added to his grief.
"It's crazy and that's what breaks me down more, it's like we can't do much with this epidemic of the coronavirus going around," says Santos.
Ruiz's cousin, Joel Martinez, agrees that it's hard not being able to get together during a time of mourning.
"We wanna be with each other, hug each other, talk to each other, be with each other, you know, the whole family together," says Joel Martinez. "And with this pandemic going on we can't."
Ruiz's family says they plan to hold a small service soon, then a more traditional one later when everybody can attend.
Ruiz's family also wants to encourage others to not make the same mistake as Ruiz, who wasn’t wearing a helmet at the time of his crash.
"It was such a nice day out, and I think he just left his helmet home thinking he's going to drive and be good, and unfortunately the one day he left his helmet was the one day he got into an accident," says Martinez.
