Workers are threatening to go on strike at the Hunts Point Terminal Market unless a new contract deal is reached.
More than 1,300 employees are ready to walk off the job at 12:01 a.m. Friday, according to Teamsters Local 202 President Dan Kane.
The workers are asking for a fair wage increase of $25 per week. The union leader says their demands aren't unreasonable given how lucrative the market is, generating $2 billion in revenue each year as the biggest supplier of fresh produce to area restaurants and supermarkets.
A spokesperson for the Hunts Point Market said in a statement, "Discussions are ongoing and we are confident that all parties can come to a resolution on this matter to avoid a work stoppage." However, Kane says the workers don't share that confidence, with 95 percent voting to authorize the strike.
The market adds that if an agreement isn't reached by the deadline, there are contingencies in places to make sure it remains open.
