A house in Stamford went up in flames Thursday after a fire quickly spread up three floors.

Ten people lived in apartments inside the house on the corner of Adams Avenue and Chestnut Street. A woman who lived on the third floor says the smoke alarms woke her up around 8:30 a.m. She then helped wake everyone else up and get them out to safety.

Firefighters say the fire started in the back of the house on the first floor and then spread to the second and third floors. They say the fire spread quickly because the house had a wooden frame. That also caused a lot of smoke, which could be seen from I-95.

The Hart Magnet School is located across the street from the home. However, officials determined there was no danger, so the school was not evacuated.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
