The Thanksgiving travel rush is well underway, as millions are expected to flood area airports and roadways.

Port Authority executive director Rick Cotton has a warning for travelers before the rush begins. 

"Leave extra time if you plan to travel through one of the Port Authority airports this week and leave at least three hours to get to the airport,” he said.

Port Authority officials say they’re expecting a record-breaking number of travelers this week, especially at JFK Airport where over 1.34 million people will board a flight.

There will also be no shortage of people on the roads this Thanksgiving holiday.

AAA Northeast spokesperson Alec Slatky says AAA is estimating that almost 4.8 million New Yorkers will drive at least 50 miles from home for Thanksgiving. The worst travel times will be Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

"Go enjoy your time with friends and family, celebrate, but make sure you get home safe,” said Slatky. “Have a sober driver that's ready to take people home."

Sarah Evans was visiting family in Setauket and is traveling back to Florida. She has some simple advice for travelers.

"I would definitely say arrive early. I think that things are going to be crazy. Lines are going to be long,” she said.

Sunday will be the busiest travel day after Thanksgiving. Port Authority officials also recommend taking public transportation to avoid congestion on the road.
