Tips for keeping cool in extreme heat

The risk of severe thunderstorms increases with excess heat and humidity. But what should you do if you are caught outside during a thunderstorm?

The risk of heat-related sickness will rise with excessive heat and humidity over the next few days as Connecticut experiences a possible heat wave. 
Keeping cool and not over doing it are some tips experts say are key.
Staying inside air-conditioned areas and limiting outdoor activities are the easiest ways to stay cool.
But if you have to go outside, officials say do it early in the morning before the full sun and heat arrive during the day.
Avoid direct sunlight and wear light-colored clothing. Experts say avoid wearing heavy clothing and drink plenty of water. 
Those in need of a cool area can find shelter at a local cooling center.
