The Torrington Police Activities League held its first-ever Summer Fest Friday.
The two-day event includes a car show starting tonight, plus arts and crafts, movies at the Warner Theater and some basketball tournaments tomorrow.
There will be a carnival at Center Plaza.
There will also be a backpack giveaway, with 1,000 backpacks filled with school supplies being handed out to kids at Franklin Street Plaza Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.
Police Athletic League Officer Robert Simon says after the past year-and-a-half, it's refreshing to be able to get back to community policing.
"The biggest hope to me is to see hundreds of kids having fun and to see the community getting together," Simon says.
