The support for Ukraine is growing locally including a rally scheduled this weekend in Southport.
A rally will be held Saturday at the Ukrainian American Club of Southport on Kings Drive. The club has been around for 100 years.
Club member Dennis Novak says members recite the Ukrainian national anthem monthly at their meetings and that the words in the song hold deep meaning today more than ever.
"If you listen, they are actually saying in the anthem that the Ukraine is not dead yet, and that it will not die. That's their spirit."
Novak says the last week has been a difficult one especially when watching the news.
Carol Gudzik says her husband is the president of the club and her husband's grandfather is one of the founding members. Gudzik says it's been tough for members who have friends and family in Ukraine who are unable to get out as Russia advances.
She says the situation is heartbreaking, and she hopes the support rally will bring more awareness to the conflict in Europe.
The event will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the upper parking lot.
More Ukrainian support events are being held this weekend in Westport and Milford.
